Put proper serum or hair spray in before and after using hot tools flat iron is always advised. However, if you fail to clean the leftover on the plates can actually shorten the lifetime of hot tools flat iron. If you spend some time to clean the leftover every use, you can keep them new and functional. Here are some tips from personal experience.

When you have finished straighten your hair, immediately unplug it and let it cool. Make sure it is left in a safe place where it is not able to burn anything. When the iron has completely cooled down, wring wet and clean rag and gently wipe down your entire iron, including the plates.

If the leftover is still on the plates after wiping with rag. You may need a cleansing solution, it is up to you. You need a little alcohol and paper towels.

Soak the paper towel with alcohol and gently rub your hot tools flat iron. Remember that do NOT use anything abrasive such as pot scrubbers because it will only damage the plates. You have to rub for about two minutes, and the paper towel may tear. Repeat steps until all leftover is off.

Finally, use a rag with plain water to remove the cleansing solution in your flat iron. It might damage your hair if failure to do. Because the chemical reaction from heating up can often times emit toxic fumes if you use cleaning solution. The same thing could happen if you use non abrasive household cleaning products on your iron too.

Even the best hot tools flat iron needs to be cleaned properly. Keeping the overall appearance of your iron, you will save the unnecessary hair damage.
